Most expensive place in U.S. to buy a home is in this Bay Area city

(KRON) -- With a median selling price of $10.73 million per house, Atherton reclaimed the #1 spot on an annual list of most expensive zip codes in America.

PropertyShark’s annual ranking of the top 100 most expensive zip codes used closing sale prices from 2026 to show what buyers actually paid, rather than what sellers asked for in listing prices.

"For the first time ever, one zip code broke into eight-figure territory. Atherton, Calif., reclaimed the #1 spot with a nearly $11 million median sale price," PropertyShark wrote. "As always, the country’s leading zip codes were characterized by coastal proximity. Of the 122 zips making up the top 100 -- the result of multiple price ties -- 72 are located within five miles of the coast."

Sagaponack, New York, earned the runner-up spot with a $7.35 million median sale price in its zip code. The only other Bay Area city to crack the top 10, Los Altos, had a median price of $4,875,000.
